In the USA, a standard chart for mattress sizes is available. Almost all manufacturers follow these standard sizes. Single or twin size mattresses are 39 inches wide, but a double or full size mattress has a width of 54 inches. Both single and full sizes are 75 inches long. This length is too short for some adults. Full size mattress is more appropriate for a single person only if he is less than 5 feet 5 inches tall. Full size or twin mattresses are increasingly used for teenage bedrooms. Queen size mattresses are 60 inches wide and around 80 inches long. Measured as today's most accepted mattress sizes, these mattresses are comfortable for couples. These type mattresses are ideal for small master bedrooms and guest rooms.
The pocket sprung mattress is a newer type with literally hundreds or thousands of individual springs that are each pocketed so that movement in one area of the bed causes the mattress springs to compress and adjust to your body but leaves the rest of the bed unaffected. The thick ticking over the springs ensures a comfortable sleep while the large number of pockets and springs ensure a quiet and comfortable sleep. Some claim that the pocket sprung mattress is equal or superior in comfort to memory foam mattresses, but of course, this is due to individual preferences.
