Physical comfort can also be provided by a reassuring touch, a hand on our shoulder or even a hug. When we are touched by another person it can provide a sense of having someone else on our side, empathising, sharing in our pain. We can feel touched by their concern and that can provide an important sense of comfort. We are not alone, someone else cares.
Food is an important source of comfort for many people. Cold winter nights are often warmed by comfort food. Soups, casseroles, stews are warm and nourishing. Hot chocolate is a welcome drink after a brisk walk in the snow. When people are unwell they are often comforted by chicken soup or some such variant on the theme. Sad people may turn to food when they are feeling down. After bad news, a break-up or a disappointment food can provide reassurance and comfort.
